Moving to a different state

by Laura on June 5, 2012

Sorry for the no posts last week!  For those who don’t know, we are excited to make a move from TX to Colorado in just a few weeks.  Getting everything ready to put our home on the market, tie up loose ends, and figure out our move has taken all my brain power!  To save my sanity, posts will be once a week for June :)

I think it would be helpful to many families to add a series on moving with young kids.  I’ll be doing some research on that as well as our own experiences.  So, to kick it off, any good tips to share?

We moved from PA to WA last summer. I think the most important thing is to make sure the lovies and irreplaceable special toys stay with you, as much as possible. Beyond that, make sure your boxes are labeled with as much detail as you are comfortable with and that your movers get the boxes into the correct rooms at your destination. We have been here for 10 months and there are still things that are missing.

Another thing that you have to plan for is whether most of your belongings will stay in your old home until you sell it (or for weeks or months until it is moved). Plan to re-buy child safety and convenience items, like outlet plugs, night lights, bathroom stools, and pop-up hampers, if you’ll be without them for a while. You’ll also probably rebuy a lot of your shampoos, bubble baths, etc., because those are things that you don’t want to pack, lest they spill in the moving van!

Ah thank you Alison! Good idea on re-buying the child safety and convenience items. We are going to be in a short term furnished place for a little while and didn’t think about those things.
