3 Tips from an Airline Stewardess

by Laura on April 30, 2012

On our recent trip to Kauai, I went to the back of the plane during a break with my youngest.  The airline attendants were taking a break for a moment and didn’t mind chatting with me for a second.  I asked them specifically for any expert tips they had for families traveling with babies and young children.  Here’s what they said:

1.  Have plenty of everything. The airline companies don’t carry anything on the planes for passengers anymore.  Make sure to carry enough diapers, baby food, formula, and activities.  In fact, bring extra.

2.  If you need to heat up bottles,  the planes do not have microwaves, but they can heat up the bottles in a coffee pot.  It is a little easier if you are nursing or can train your baby to not mind room temperature bottles.  In addition, they can bring warm water to your seat.

3.  Talk to your pediatrician about Benadryl to help your child get on the right time zone.  Your pediatrician will also have tips for traveling with each age and resources to point you to.

Have a tip you’d like to share?

We have 4 kids ages 5-15. They each have an iPod with different stuff on each one, and we travel with plenty of cords to charge them all along with headphone splitters. So is one of the kids is watching something great, we can plug in the splitter and two kids can watch. I also reload their iPods at the start of each trip so everyone has a few new games and movies to get excited about. Not much to keep the kids truly entertained on overseas flights, but it helps. And lots of snacks.
